About the project

The objective of Partners for Africa is to demonstrate the role of renewable energy in poverty eradication and to offer support to policy making activities in the following areas:

  • Sustainable resource management
  • Health and public health
  • Enterprise development

What we do

The project works to support and stimulate the activities of the European Energy Initiative for Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development. These goals are to be achieved by mobilising international and local partnerships to create an innovative forum for developing new programmes, project platforms, and in particular to support policy making. The mobilisation of partnerships in Africa involves:
  1. Identifying partners
  2. Bringing them together in partnership structures
  3. Supporting and contributing to their financing efforts
  4. Facilitating their set-up and operation

Tools for the mobilisation of partnerships include the organisation and support of meetings, publication of newsletters, and other information networking services. Notably, three workshops are to be organised in three African countries (South Africa, Senegal, Zambia), to support this activity.

Project results

The results of the partnership activities are to provide policy makers with the essential tools, results and information to allow them to develop targeted and effective policy.

The partnerships are of three essential types: Policy Partnerships, Programme Partnerships and Action Partnerships. Policy Partnerships support the development of progressive energy policy initiatives directly through research activities and stakeholder networking. Programme partnerships initiate and support training and capacity building initiatives. These will provide economic and political actors with the necessary skills to support and guide the development of markets and technologies. Action Partnerships lay the foundations for concrete projects including mainly pilot projects. These will for example open the way for new markets, produce results that can be used for national guidelines, or produce lessons and experience for international aid and investment policy.

Further information on the partnership approach may be found on the partnerships page.

The project consortium

The consortium has a high level of expertise and high quality contacts in Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. The consortium comprises 6 highly competent actors, active in the renewable energy and international development fields. Three of these are from Europe, and 3 from Africa. The 3 European members of the consortium are the WIP-ETA Consortium (Germany/Italy), ITDG (UK) and SEI (Sweden). These players lend particular strength to this proposal through their experience in the coordination of the global energy and development networks: LAMNET, CARENSA and Sparknet. These networks deal with local, national and international energy and development issues. These interdisciplinary networks support international dialogue and action fora, bringing together key actors and stakeholders from the energy, biomass and development sectors.

The African consortium members are experienced and have an established reputation in the fields of renewable energy and development. They are Illovo Sugar (South Africa), ENDA (Senegal) and CEEEZ (Zambia). Further, short-listed international and regional organisations will closely support the consortium in the organisation and creation of partnerships. These include NGOs, governmental organisations, multilateral institutions and companies.
