Workshop outputs: Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Household Energy and Health

Proceedings from the Partners for Africa Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Household Energy and Health held in Dakar, Senegal, from 20 - 21 April 2005 are now available online here.

This workshop took place in the framework of the PARTNERS FOR AFRICA PROJECT and was organised by ENDA, Senegal, in collaboration with ITDG, United Kingdom. PARTNERS FOR AFRICA is co-funded by the European Commission in the 6th Framework Programme - Specific Measures in Support of International Cooperation (INCO). (Contract FP6-INCO-DEV-502257)

PARTNERS FOR AFRICA aims to demonstrate the role of renewable energy in poverty eradication and support to policy-making activities in the following areas:

  • Sustainable resource management
  • Health and public health
  • Enterprise development

Objectives

This workshop brought together to policy makers, researchers, programme executors and the Civil Society, to discuss and analyse the different issues related to sustainable house hold energy and health, like indoor air pollution, poor lighting, sustainability and income generation; the existing policies and programmes promoting better health and the development of Millennium Goals. As well as to gather the most important policy needs and ways of implementing.

Background

Nearly three billion people worldwide cook and/or heat their homes with simple stoves burning traditional polluting fuels resulting in smoke. Nearly 2 billion have no access to electricity and consequently no opportunities to access to improved services like education, health, communications and others. The use of polluting solid fuels contributes to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in women, and is implicated in other adverse health outcomes including low birth-weight, active TB and cataracts.

Topics to be discussed

  1. Case studies of programmes, policy or actions executed or in execution related to household energy and health, and energy and income generation activities.
  2. Government strategies on household energy and development of millennium goals
  3. Research activities related to health and household energy, policy needs and ways of implementation
  4. Discussion about the needed policy priorities and actions to be taken within partners (for future work).
